Obsidian Grill

by Deborah Willhite

Obsidian Grill just opened this year, and is quickly becoming known by the locals and tourists alike.  It is an addition to the McKenzie General Store, so you place your order at the register inside then bring your ticket to the food cart in the back.

They really have a wonderful setup.  You walk out into a large, open courtyard with beautiful cedar picnic tables spread throughout, each once having a shade umbrella, string lights hanging above, and speakers set up all around playing low calm music.

Serving only top quality ingredients for their food, they are sure to impress.  All their meat is organic, vegetables are locally grown, even their ketchup is made in Portland, organic and GMO-free.

They serve sandwiches/burgers, wraps, salads, and of course a daily special to keep things interesting. They always have a few different types of beer and kombucha on tap, and they even have a game of corn hole set up for anyone to play.

All around Obsidian Grill has a great atmosphere and outstanding food.

If you are looking for a meal on the McKenzie River, Finn Rock Grill would be the place for you.  They have a wonderful deck overlooking the river, great food, cold local beer on tap, and a separate room with lottery machines!

They serve pizza, sandwiches and a variety of appetizers, including authentic bacon wrapped jalapeno poppers.

You can catch them on the weekends serving breakfast from 7-11 am, where you can get quality homemade biscuits and gravy.

Once or twice a week they will have live music, with a full bar and nine beers on tap year round, you are bound to have a good time.

Overall Finn Rock Grill is a laid back environment serving good food, with a staff that will make you feel at home.

April 26, 2014 - Wooden Boat Festival

by Deborah Willhite

The 9th Annual McKenzie River Wooden Boat Festival will be held on April 26th, 2014 at the Eagle Rock Lodge from 10:00 to 5:00 and is FREE.

This year some exciting new boats are expected to join the other 40-55 boats.  Some of the new boats expected this year are:

  • The Trapper.  This is a single person boat used by Price Helfrich in the winters to manage his McKenzie River trap lines and was built by Woodie Hindman.  This is the first show for the Trapper since being refurbished for museum shows.
  • An original Veltie Pruitt style boat.  The type used by Veltie and Prince Helfrich.   It was the first to run many rapids in western rivers and has been accurately recreated by the Wooden Boat Building School in Washington.
  • Reproductions of the Flavell II and the Suzie Too.  These two boats are historic to the running of the big rapids of the Grand Canyon.

Come and enjoy the beautiful grounds and the opportunity to visit with your friends and neighbors, casting demonstrations, fly tying workshop and food and drink (proceeds help fund the Life Jacket program).  It’s a great way to spend the day!
